FREE ONLINE TRAINING FOR SECOND LANGUAGE ENGLISH SPEAKERS
How to overcome the challenges faced by second language English broadcasters
In these divided and divisive times, true diversity of voices has never been more important. In journalism as in politics and in all walks of life.
Over the years, I've often been asked for advice by fellow second-language English journalists who saw me (and, crucially, heard me) on TV. So I thought I'd put together a free training session to share some of the tips and insights I've gained in 20+ years as a second-language English broadcaster on English-language news channels.
My experience comes from journalism, but easily applies to anyone who needs to do public speaking in English, whether at work, online or in front of a live audience.
As readers of this newsletter, you’ll have often heard me say that the second language/foreign accent barrier is more common than we think.
To be clear, this training session is not a language course. I’m not a language teacher and don’t pretend to be one.
This training session is about helping you find your authentic and effective voice even if you're not a native English speaker.
What you'll get from this training session:
* How to identify the obstacles second language English speakers have to overcome in the media (whether working in it or appearing on it)
* Learn my 5 top tips on how to speak English more confidently when broadcasting live
* How to find your authentic voice because of, and not despite, your foreign accent
DATE: Thursday February 1st, 2024
TIME: 6pm UK/GMT
There will be a Q&A part to the session where you’ll be able to ask me questions directly.
If you have any questions/suggestions before the training session, post them in the comments section below and please share this with anyone who might find it useful!
Hope to see you there,
Barbara
